NewJeans' Hanni Faces Mixed Reactions in Vietnam: Dual Citizenship and 'Boat People' Controversy
The Vietnamese response to group NewJeans' Hanni is divided.
Born in 2004, Hanni holds dual citizenship in Australia and Vietnam, having been born in Melbourne, Australia. It's known that her father hails from Hanoi and her mother from Ho Chi Minh City. Hanni's family, including her grandparents, all reside in Australia.
After passing an audition in Melbourne in October 2019, Hanni underwent approximately two years of trainee life before debuting with NewJeans last year. NewJeans has consecutively achieved success with tracks like 'Attention', 'Hype boy', 'Cookie', 'Hurt', 'OMG', and 'Ditto'. They set a Guinness record by reaching a cumulative 1 billion streams on Spotify in the shortest time among K-pop artists. With their second mini-album 'Get Up', they topped the 'Billboard 200' and had three songs simultaneously enter the 'Hot 100', establishing themselves as a leading K-pop girl group within just a year of debut.
Amidst NewJeans' global popularity, there were expectations that Hanni, due to her background, would garner full-fledged support in Vietnam. However, the perspective towards Hanni in Vietnam has been mixed.
Some Vietnamese netizens have criticized Hanni based on suspicions that her grandparents were 'Boat People'. 'Boat People' refers to South Vietnamese individuals who fled Vietnam by boat after North Vietnam won the war and the country became communist. These netizens speculate that Hanni's family might be 'Boat People' based on their nationality and place of residence.
On 'K-Crush', one of Vietnam's largest K-pop communities, there's a clash of opinions, with some criticizing Hanni and others arguing against baseless accusations.
