'The View' from the Top: Controversies and Deleted Posts of K-Celebs
In the age of the internet, where every post is immortalized and scrutinized, celebrities often find themselves in the crosshairs of controversy. The South Korean entertainment industry is no exception. Over the past year, several K-Celebrities have faced backlash for their social media posts, leading to deletions and subsequent apologies. Here's a look at five such instances that stirred the pot:
Kim Tae Ri's Request for Free Labor:
Actress Kim Tae Ri, known for her roles in "The Handmaiden" and "Twenty-Five, Twenty-One," faced criticism in May 2022. She had requested fans to provide free translation services for her YouTube videos. Given that translation is typically a paid service, especially considering the hours it can take, the request was not well-received. Following the backlash, all related data was removed, and Kim Tae Ri personally apologized to her fans.
Ko So Young's Ill-Timed Vacation Photos:
Actress Ko So Young shared family vacation photos from Japan, which would typically be innocuous. However, the timing was problematic. She posted them on Korea's Liberation Day, a day that commemorates Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule. Given the historical context and the atrocities committed by the Japanese during their rule, the post was seen as insensitive. Ko So Young later deleted the photos and issued an apology.
Kim Sung Eun's Hawaiian Vacation:
Shortly after a devastating wildfire in Maui, actress Kim Sung Eun shared photos of her Hawaiian vacation. The juxtaposition of her leisurely trip against the backdrop of a natural disaster was deemed insensitive by netizens. Following the criticism, she deleted the post.
GOT7's BamBam and the Russian Controversy:
In August 2022, BamBam from the boy group GOT7 shared throwback photos from their 2018 world tour in Russia. The timing was controversial due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. After initially deleting the post, BamBam reposted it with a defiant caption, which he later changed. He also took to Twitter to apologize and seek clarity on the criticism.
TWICE's Chaeyoung and the Swastika Shirt:
After a tour in America, TWICE's Chaeyoung posted photos where she was seen wearing a t-shirt featuring a swastika. The shirt had an image of Sid Vicious, a punk icon known for his provocative fashion. Given the swastika's association with Adolf Hitler and the atrocities of World War II, the post was deemed inappropriate. Chaeyoung promptly deleted the post and issued an apology.
In the digital age, where every action is under the microscope, celebrities must tread carefully. While some of these controversies might seem trivial, they underscore the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness. As the lines between public and private lives blur, the onus is on celebrities to be more discerning about what they share, ensuring they respect historical and cultural contexts.
