HYBE Labels Artists Shatter Records in 2023: From Billboard Hot 100 to Unprecedented First-Week Sales and 1 Billion Streams
Artists from HYBE Labels have smashed multiple records both domestically and internationally in the music industry in the first half of 2023. These breakthroughs are believed to be a result of HYBE's multi-label strategy, characterized by mergers and acquisitions (M&A) of diverse genre labels, alongside a coordinated system of simultaneous music releases.
Firstly, the '21st Century Pop Icons' BTS continue their reign as record breakers.
BTS member Jimin's solo track 'Like Crazy' topped the Billboard Hot 100, while his solo album 'FACE' reached No.2 on the Billboard 200, the highest ranking ever for a K-pop solo album. Suga's solo album 'D-DAY' also made its mark at No.2 on the Billboard 200. To celebrate their 10th anniversary, BTS's digital single 'Take Two' climbed to No.48 on the Billboard Hot 100, simultaneously securing the top spot on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global (Excl. US) charts.
SEVENTEEN shattered the K-pop record for first-week album sales. Their tenth mini-album 'FML' achieved sales of 4.55 million copies in its first week. At the time of release, this was the highest initial sales volume among K-pop artists. 'FML' also featured in the Billboard 200 charts for eight consecutive weeks.
TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) rose to No.1 on the Billboard 200 with their fifth mini-album 'The Doom's Night: TEMPTATION'. This achievement crowned TXT as the K-pop artist with the shortest debut-to-win period to achieve 'double million seller' status.
ENHYPEN left an impressive mark with their concert performances. ENHYPEN's world tour 'ENHYPEN WORLD TOUR 'MANIFESTO'', which took place from the end of last year to early this year, drew global attention with performances across 12 regions, including South Korea, the United States, and Japan. In Japan, they made a remarkable achievement as the 'first 4th generation artist to hold a solo dome concert'.
Second-year debut girl groups also continued their record-breaking streak on the global stage.
Le Sserafim's first full-length album 'UNFORGIVEN' spent the longest time (7 weeks) on the Billboard 200 amongst 4th generation K-pop girl groups. Le Sserafim also became the quickest girl group to reach a million in initial sales since their debut. NUJIN's single album 'OMG' saw two tracks (OMG, Ditto) chart on the Billboard Hot 100. 'Ditto' set a new record by staying No.1 for the longest period (14 consecutive weeks) on Melon, South Korea's largest music platform. NUJIN also made it to the Guinness World Records as the artist to reach 1 billion streams (cumulative total) on Spotify in the shortest time, having five songs with over a hundred million streams.
HYBE also successfully launched a new concept artist by blending music and technology. HYBE's subsidiary HYBE IM and Big Hit Music transformed Lee Hyun into another persona, 'Midnight', through 'Project L'. The incorporation of multilingual pronunciation correction and voice design technology in Midnight's music and music videos sparked widespread discussion.
A HYBE official stated, "The diverse new records pouring in are the result of the multi-label strategy we have been promoting as a medium- and long-term growth plan. We hope you will continue to pay attention to the record-breaking journey of HYBE Labels artists."
