SuperM's Future Uncertain: Factors Leading to Speculation on Comeback and Potential Disbandment
Despite earlier news of a 2023 SuperM comeback, recent developments have led fans and media to speculate that the group may have "virtually disbanded." Several factors contribute to these concerns.
Lucas's departure from NCT and WayV has raised questions about his continued involvement with SuperM. SM Entertainment announced on May 10th:
"Following careful discussion between the company and Lucas, Lucas has decided to leave NCT and WayV and focus on his personal activities."
With the announcement of Lucas's departure and plans to continue as a solo artist, his Naver profile was promptly updated to exclude him from the mentioned groups. However, his name still remains associated with SuperM, causing confusion. Additionally, Lucas's Instagram letter made no mention of leaving the project boy group.
SuperM, formed in 2019 as a global project boy group by Capitol Records in the United States, is a collaboration between SM Entertainment's founder Lee Soo Man and the music label. Dubbed the "K-POP Avengers," the group consists of SHINee Taemin, EXO Baekhyun, Kai, NCT Taeyong, Mark, WayV Lucas, and Ten. The group achieved success on the Billboard charts and gained popularity in both Korean and US markets. However, activities were paused when members like Baekhyun and Taemin began their military services.
Four reasons have been cited for SuperM's potential disbandment:
#Lucas's departure from the group following a gaslighting controversy. As he expressed a desire to pursue a solo career, a SuperM comeback seems unlikely.
#Lee Soo Man's exit from SM Entertainment complicates any potential SuperM comeback, as the group was formed under his leadership. The producer has been in conflict with his former company over management rights.
#EXO Kai's military enlistment makes it difficult to continue promotions without two members already absent.
#SuperM's comeback has not been included in SM Entertainment's second and third-quarter reports, which detail upcoming comebacks and debuts.
These factors have led some to believe that SuperM may, in fact, be disbanded.
